Conventions and conferences beside the river Rhine

Cologne and Bonn have become a centre for conventions, conferences, incentives and trade fairs at the heart of Europe.

This development is supported, on the one hand, by the excellent infrastructure including the modern, centrally located Cologne Bonn Airport, the dense railway network, western Germany’s major motorway junction, outstanding hotel and gastronomy facilities and the comprehensive and multifaceted offer of event locations. The region captivates and impresses through the fascinating combination of ancient Roman history and a modern conference atmosphere.

The locations of Cologne offer around 131,000 square metres of conference space with well over 100,000 places; if one adds the surrounding countryside, this number even increases significantly. The largest provider of conference room capacities in the Cathedral City is KölnKongress, a joint subsidiary of the city of Cologne and the Cologne Trade Fair Corporation (Koelnmesse). The company operates both conference centres of the trade fair corporation as well as event locations such as the Gürzenich, the Tanz-brunnen (Dance Fountain) with the Theater am Tanzbrunnen, the Flora, the Rhine Terraces and km 689 Cologne Beach Club, the Bastion, the ZOOLocation and the Zeughaus (Armoury). For the really big events – concerts, galas and annual general meetings – the most suitable location is the Lanxess Arena, capable of hosting more than 18,000 visitors. Hotels also make an essential contribution to the growth of Cologne’s conference business: in the meantime, most international hotel chains have established themselves in the city and thus strongly expanded the available conference facilities.

The Beethoven City of Bonn is also about to establish itself as a globally recognised conference location, especially thanks to the new World Conference Centre Bonn with a total of 5,000 square metres in net exhibition space. The former plenary hall of the German Federal Parliament and the Wasserwerk (Water Works) are the cornerstones of the current conference centre with approximately 60,000 event participants per year. Since 2009, the extension building and the Ameron World Conference Hotel have complemented the range of offers. Here, conventions can be held in immediate vicinity of the United Nations, the Deutsche Welle radio and TV station, the houses of the Museum Mile and a large number of international associations and organisations.
Bonn also offers a wide selection of conference hotels. The Steigenberger Grandhotel Petersberg, the Maritim Hotel Bonn, the former electoral ballroom La Redoute or the brand-new Kameha Grand Hotel provide facilities and space for large-scale conferences.
